During the carefree days of summer, life gets a little easier. There’s more sunlight, less fussing with coats and boots, the world around us is green, and our energy is naturally higher.

And, if you are a parent, perhaps your morning routine of lunches and bus stops will come to an end this week!

All of this makes summer the perfect time to focus on self care.  And that’s why we are making it our theme of the month for July here at Healthoholics!

You might be wondering – what exactly is self care?  The term is used widely – and with all of the different ideas out there, it’s hard to know exactly how to define it. But, to make it as simple as possible, it’s exactly what the name implies!

Self care is care provided by you, for you.

At Healthoholics, it’s our goal is to guide you on your path to optimal wellness! So this month, we will share some ideas to help develop your personal own self care routine, and introduce you to some effective tools you can use.

We know bed-time routines work great for kids. But as adults, with the constant demands placed on us by careers, households, and other daily challenges, we often let our own routine fall by the wayside.  Developing a basic self care routine helps us ensure the important things we need to stay healthy (and sane!) get attention everyday.

Self care can include broad habits like:

  • Eating a well-balanced diet
  • Staying well hydrated
  • Exercising regularly
  • Getting enough good quality sleep

But, it may also include more specific practices, that you find enjoyable and nurturing. These self-care practices may include things like:

  • A heart-to-heart with a close friend
  • A warm epsom salt bath (maybe with an enjoyable essential oil blend!)
  • Sitting on your porch or deck, sipping a cup of herbal tea
  • Reading a good book
  • Practicing breathing exercises
  • Visiting a counselor
  • Walking in nature
  • Taking a nap
  • Joining a yoga class
  • Gardening
  • Learning something new — like a language, dance, or knitting
  • Listening to music you love
  • Journalling
  • Practicing gratitude
  • Meditation
  • Scheduling a relaxing massage
  • Buying yourself a little gift of some kind — a beeswax candle, a dark chocolate bar, or some fresh-cut flowers

Many of us spend much of our lives caring for, supporting, and nurturing others — whether that be in our work, our families, or social circles. Carving out dedicated time to care for you is even more important!

And, it bears saying… self-care is the least selfish thing we can do! Because, when we care for ourselves, we are in turn able to give more to those around us.
