Spring is my favourite time of the year, and if you’re like me you get tired of being stuck indoors, especially after the long winter months. Well the same thing goes for working out! As much as going to the gym or working out from home can be part of a healthy lifestyle, taking it outside can be extremely beneficial not only for your body, but your mind too! Now is the perfect time to make the switch, skip the gym and go outside, and here’s why…

We all know that winter can be tough, and can cause a bit of the blues due to the lack of sun. The lack of sun during the winter is why, by the time spring arrives, many of us are deficient in vitamin D. Rebuilding our Vitamin D stores is one of the reasons why we should be outdoors as much as possible (even if its just 20 minutes a day). After all it’s called the sunshine vitamin for a reason!

Today, there are so many classes and work out trends… you may have tried a spin class, kickboxing, pilates, or even a bootcamp. These activities usually comes at a price and can cause a bit of a dent to your pocket book. This is another reason why I’m a huge advocate of getting outside, as not only can you go at your own leisure, you also save money as getting outdoors doesn’t cost a thing! Not a bad way to exercise!

I cannot stress this enough, but working out outside does wonders for the mind. We spend so much time day-to-day on our screens whether it be the computer, tv, or phone. This can cause a disconnect to our mind and body. Going outside can help reduce anxiety, improve sleep, and calm the mind as you suddenly feel the grass below your feet, feel the wind in your hair, and smell the flowers that are in full bloom!

Not sure how to take your work outs outdoors? Here are some simple ways that you can exercise outside:

1. Walk

Ever feel like when you’re on the treadmill walking seems like a chore? You are either watching a tv screen or mindlessly looking at what everyone else is doing at the gym. When you go for a walk in nature, you see the beauty around you! Plus, you can make it even more enjoyable by bringing your dog, hitting a trail, or walking with a friend. You might notice that you end up walking longer then you intended!

2. Yoga

I love bringing my yoga mat outdoors. I find doing some stretches in the backyard first thing in the morning just helps me get started with my day. If you don’t have a backyard, you can go to a park! Bonus, try a bit of grounding! Stand still with your feet touching the grass, this can help rebalance your body as the earth releases negative ions, which is a great way to start your day!

3. Bike

If you have ever gone to a spin class, it can be a fun, yet intense, experience. As much as I do enjoy a good spin class, I find as soon as the warmer weather arrives I crave biking outside instead. What’s great is you can be productive while biking, by doing a few errands during your ride too! Forgot to get a few things at the grocery store? Add a basket to your bike so you can check some tasks off your to-do list while on your route of activity!

So, now is the time to make the change! It’s so important to take advantage of what nature has provided us.

Spring is so short, and summer is just around the corner. So, next time you grab your running shoes or pack that gym bag, think again and just head outside — your body and mind will thank you!
