At the beginning of each new year, gym memberships seem to be all the rage. Many of us have set goals and resolutions to improve our health, and that’s great! One common trend we notice, however, is these routines don’t tend to stick for very long. We’ve talked about some reason why here.

For many of us, our workouts turn into a monotonous routine, which isn’t any fun. Working out becomes a chore, and we all have enough chores. But, exercise can be fun! We just need to adjust our perspective a little.

Before we discuss how to make the most of your gym membership, let’s take a peek at the benefits of exercise.

Benefits of Exercise:

  • Reduced risk of cardiovascular disease
  • Mood boost
  • Reduced body fat
  • Stronger bones and muscle
  • Supports your immune system
  • Aids the body in detoxifying toxins

So, fellow Healthoholics, what are a few ways we can stay motivated and use our gym memberships effectively?

  1. Make Your Workout Fun
Every single person has different interests, like, and dislikes. Lifting weights and running on a treadmill might work for some people; for others, not so much. The great thing about most gyms, they offer a variety of classes in differing skill levels, from beginner to expert So there’s something for everyone!
  2. Time is on Your Side:
Always workout at a time that works best for you! If you’re a morning person, go in the morning. If you’re a night owl, maybe an evening workout suits you better. If you like to workout on your lunch break… do it!

Gyms typically open early in the morning and close late at night, which works out perfectly for those who have difficult schedules. And remember, you don’t have to spend a super long period of time at the gym. 30 minutes of targeted exercise is all you need to reap the benefits.

  3. Don’t Stress Over It:
We’re not going to be in the mood to hit the gym 7 days a week. You’re going to have days where you aren’t up for it, and that’s okay. Your body needs time to recover, too. When we over exercise, it creates stress on the body, which can end up impacting our health negatively.

Don’t make excuses, but do listen to what your body is telling you.

  4. Try Something New:
As I mentioned above, doing the same activity time and time again, gets old. Plus, your body gets used to doing the same exercises, which can create plateaus. Get out of your comfort zone and try something new. You might find a new activity you really enjoy!

If you think outside the box a little, you can easily make your gym memberships work for YOU! After all, you’re paying for that membership, so you might as well take full advantage of it.
