About the Recipe

Do you juice?

Maybe it’s something you’ve always wanted to try, but you’ve been unsure about how to build a juice that not only tastes good, but leaves you feeling even better!

I hear you.

Before I knew that there was a 5 step process that went into building a solid green juice, I’d always end up with either a super thick over-vegged smoothie, or a few small drops of juiced greens. I just couldn’t figure out how to get the right quantity, consistency, or flavour.

But don’t worry! If you’ve been wanting to jump on the juicing bandwagon, then I’ve got you covered. Because there is something about making your own juices at home that brings about a new appreciation for fresh produce — especially since our cold winter days are coming to a close and the spring/summer season is right around the corner!

So, why juice?

Here are some benefits that I think you’ll be able to get behind:

  • Great way to get large amounts of green into your body that you might not already eat.
  • If you don’t like the taste of vegetables, you can easily mask the taste with fruit like apples, pears, pineapple or hits of lemon, lime, and citrus.
  • Increased energy levels.
  • Clear, glowing skin.
  • Eyes and teeth become whiter and brighter.
  • Improved mental clarity.
  • So much more!

Overall, the health benefits will depend on what ingredients you decide to put into your juice. But most green juices are packed with vitamins, rich in chlorophyll (which helps your body to detoxify), and are high in antioxidants.

So, now that you know some of the benefits… how do you go about putting this all together?

Let me break it down.

5-Steps to Building the Ultimate Green Juice

STEP 1: Pick your base

  • 1 whole cucumber
  • 3-5 stalks of celery

These ingredients will ensure that you get a large quantity of juice as they are mostly water based vegetables.

STEP 2: Pick 1 or 2 leafy greens

  • 2-3 cups Kale
  • 2-3 cups Spinach
  • ½ head of Romaine
  • ½ head green leaf lettuce
  • 3-4 florets broccoli

STEP 3: Pick 1 fruit to sweeten

  • ½ pineapple
  • 1 medium apple
  • 1 medium orange
  • 1 medium grapefruit
  • 1 medium pear
  • 3-4 regular sized kiwi
  • 2-3 cups grapes

STEP 4: Optional: Add for extra flavour and to detoxify

  • 1 whole lime
  • 1 whole lemon
  • 1 inch ginger
  • Handful cilantro
  • Handful parsley

Step 5: Place all ingredients in a juicer and enjoy!

TIP! Ensure you’re using a juicer, not a blender! Some good quality juicer brands include, Omega and Breville which range in price between $180-$250.

What level of juicer are you? Beginner? Intermediate? Or Expert?

Recipe
Ingredients:
  • 1/2 pineapple
  • 3 stalks of celery
  • 3-4 florets of broccoli
  • 1 cucumber
  • 1-inch of ginger
  • 1 lime
Instructions:
  1. Wash the ingredients under running water.
  2. Core and cut the pineapple.
  3. Cut celery stalks into smaller pieces.
  4. Add ingredients in a juicer all together.
  5. The juicing takes literally a minute or two.
  6. Once juiced, pour into glasses and serve right away! (I drink mine out of a wine glass to make it extra classy) 😉

Storage: The juice is best when enjoyed right after preparing. If you do want to drink it later, ensure that you store it in a fridge at all times! It’s best in a glass container filled right to the top, then sealed, to limit exposure to oxygen. It should last up to 48 hours from juicing, (shake first!) but I suggest drinking within 24 hours.
