Many adults experience the benefits that chiropractic care has on their mobility, function and overall health, but did you know that infants, children and adolescents can benefit from chiropractic care as well?

Like adults, children and teens can also experience musculoskeletal (MSK) pain and injuries to the neck, back, shoulders, ankles and knees from high impact sports, day-to-day bumps and falls and postural strains. Infants are also at risk of developing joint dysfunctions as a result of abnormal forces from the birthing process as well as rapid growth periods.

Chiropractic care can not only help with treatment of an injury, but it can help in preventing the reoccurrences of MSK conditions. Furthermore, Chiropractic care may also alleviate/manage symptoms associated with infantile colic, reflux, asthma and constipation by addressing any underlying joint dysfunctions within the spine that could be impacting nerve function. It is important to note that there are many different causes of these symptoms so it is necessary to rule out any underlying medical conditions as well as dietary or environmental factors by an appropriate health care provider.

It is a common misconception that the techniques used on children are the same as those that Chiropractors use on their adult patients. This is entirely not true.

The manual techniques used on children are modified in order to accommodate for their age, size and developmental stage. Treatments may include the use of gentle joint mobilization or manipulations, soft tissue therapy or exercise therapy. Chiropractic is a non-invasive, safe and effective form of care that helps promote overall health and wellness.

It is important to understand that pediatric chiropractic care is a complementary form of healthcare. Chiropractors are trained to identify any “red flags” indicating a more serious health concern warranting a medical referral but they are not meant to replace recommended routine care with the child’s Pediatrician or Family Physician.

If you have any further questions about chiropractic care for children, I’d be happy to answer your questions. You can read more about me and request an appointment here.
